Midas: Misprint Protocol

Steps for documenting, preserving, and troubleshooting a misprint on the Midas system.

Overview

This protocol outlines the required steps to follow when a misprint occurs on the Midas printer. Proper documentation, component preservation, and environmental checks support accurate diagnosis and help prevent recurring issues.

1. Log the Print Job

Record the misprint in the office’s print log. Detailed documentation helps identify trends and recurring issues.

Include the following information:

  • Date and time of the print
  • Capsule material and shade
  • Case type (crown, veneer, inlay, onlay, etc.)
  • Number of capsules used
  • Print orientation selected
  • Software version and printer serial number
  • Any on-screen errors or notifications
  • Observations about printer behavior during the cycle

2. Photograph the Misprint

Capture high-resolution photos before removing the restoration from the capsule platform.

Recommended documentation:

  • Images from multiple angles
  • Bright, even lighting
  • Close-up of the defect area
  • One image showing the full capsule platform
  • Avoid glare or reflections

3. Inspect the Capsule Optical Window

Examine the capsule’s optical window for contamination.

Look for:

  • Dust
  • Smudges
  • Resin residue
  • Scratches

Clean the window with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth if needed. Any contamination can interfere with projected light and cause misprints.

4. Preserve the Capsule

Do not discard the capsule.

  • Place it in a sealed plastic bag or watertight container
  • Label with date, shade, and case type
  • Keep the capsule available in case SprintRay requests it for evaluation

5. Review the Print Orientation

Verify the orientation chosen in the printing software. Incorrect orientation commonly leads to misprints, especially for thin or detailed restorations.

Evaluate whether:

  • Margins lacked adequate support
  • Thin areas were angled improperly
  • Orientation created strain during pressing
  • Excessive rotation or tilt was used

6. Clean the Print Glass

Contaminants on the print glass can distort curing.

  • Inspect the surface under bright lighting
  • Look for fingerprints, dust, or smudges
  • Clean using isopropyl alcohol and approved glass cleaner

Even minor residue can impact print quality.
