How to Print From Raw Scan Data

Learn to efficiently convert raw scan data into an STL file that's ready to print.

Overview

Raw intraoral scans are often incomplete and unprintable in their original form. Print Setup includes automated mesh repair tools that can detect, base, and fix these scans with minimal input. This guide walks through how to prepare a raw scan STL for printing.

Steps to Print From Raw Scan Data

  1. Select the Dental Model Indication
In Print Setup, begin by selecting Dental Model as the indication type for your print job.

  2. Upload the Raw Scan STL File
Drag and drop your raw intraoral scan into the platform. Print Setup will automatically recognize that this is an unclosed scan.
  3. Review the Critical Error Detected Message
You’ll likely see a message stating that a critical error has been detected. This is expected for raw scan files and indicates that the scan is incomplete or open.
  1. Click Prepare Print
    Proceed by clicking Prepare Print.
    The AI will automatically:
    1. Trim any excess or noisy data
    2. Add a base
    3. Repair mesh issues
    4. Generate a print-ready model

Optional: Make Further Adjustments
If needed, you can toggle Autopilot Off to:

  • Manually adjust the orientation
  • Edit supports
  • Use mesh tools like plane cut, label, or resize

5. Send to Printer
If no further changes are needed, click Send to Printer to complete the job like any other print.
