Midas Restore Workflow

1. Case Selection

Select the least-invasive restoration that can meet the functional and esthetic objective. Confirm that the restoration type is included in the current regional Midas Restore labeling before beginning treatment.

OPPOSING MATERIAL: Do not use Midas Restore when the opposing restoration is zirconia or e.max®. Best suited for an opposing natural tooth or composite resin.

Do not proceed: Do not deliver an incompletely cured restoration, use Midas Restore outside its current regional indication, or use the material in a patient with a known allergy to an ingredient.

2. Prep Guide

Preserve natural tooth structure while creating a preparation that is smooth, readable, and compatible with the approved restoration thickness and path of insertion.

2.1 Record occlusion before preparation

  1. When clinically appropriate, evaluate occlusion before anesthesia with articulation paper 20 micrometers thick or thinner while the patient is upright.
  2. Capture the working arch, opposing arch, and bite before preparing the tooth.
  3. Identify non-adaptable tension contacts that tend to drive a cusp away from the tooth and adaptable compression contacts that may allow preservation.

2.2 Inlay, onlay, and partial-crown preparation

  1. Cover cusps with non-adaptable tension contacts.
  2. When the isthmus is 4 mm deep or less, preserve at least 2 mm of wall thickness in a functional cusp and 1 mm in a nonfunctional cusp. Cover any cusp below the applicable threshold.
  3. When the isthmus is deeper than 4 mm, preserve at least 3 mm in every remaining cusp. Cover any cusp below that threshold.
  4. Use a simple butt-joint margin on a covered cusp with an approximately 110-degree external exit angle and a clear cavosurface margin.
  5. Create 15-20 degrees of combined taper.
  6. If all buccal cusps or all lingual cusps are covered, add a 2 mm axial wall only when the margin can remain in enamel.
  7. Remove adjacent box forms and blend the preparation into smooth coronal-to-apical transitions.

2.3 Full-crown preparation

  1. Create a rounded shoulder or chamfer with rounded internal transitions and a continuous, clearly readable margin.
  2. Provide at least 1 mm of restorative clearance when using the current AI Studio cemented-restoration workflow.
  3. Remove undercuts that would block the intended path of insertion.
  4. Verify the approved minimum thickness throughout the preparation and design; the current AI Studio thickness check evaluates a 1 mm minimum.

2.4 Veneer preparation

  1. Use a no-prep approach only when the additive design can provide an acceptable emergence profile, facial contour, proximal form, incisal position, occlusion, phonetics, and cleansability.
  2. For a prepared veneer, preserve enamel where clinically appropriate and create a smooth, continuous finish line that can be captured digitally.
  3. Provide enough reduction for the approved material thickness without overcontouring. Follow the current Midas Restore profile for thickness and edge design.
  4. Avoid sharp internal angles and unplanned undercuts. Control proximal and incisal extension according to the approved design.

3. Scan

What you need: Intraoral scanner; camera for veneer and esthetic cases; radiographic records as indicated; SprintRay Cloud account

3.1 Capture the core record set

  1. Capture pre-treatment shade and photographs before isolation or dehydration when esthetics are important.
  2. Scan the working arch, opposing arch, and bite in a stable relationship. Capture pre-operative scans before preparation when they will help the design.
  3. After preparation, retract tissue, control fluids, and capture the entire finish line, adjacent contacts, and enough surrounding anatomy for registration.
  4. Review each scan in the scanner software. Remove artifacts, fill clinically relevant data gaps, and confirm that upper, lower, and bite files align correctly.

4.2 AI Studio: crown, inlay, and onlay

  1. Link the Midas printer to the SprintRay Cloud account, sign in, select Studio, and start a new treatment.
  2. Upload the upper and lower scans in proper bite relation. AI Studio accepts STL, PLY, and OBJ; PLY can preserve color for margin and anatomy review.
  3. Select each tooth and assign Crown, Inlay, or Onlay. Review any restrictions shown for adjacent restorations.
  4. Review the automatically detected margin and edit it until it follows the complete preparation finish line.
  5. Position the proposed library tooth and refine anatomy, contacts, and occlusion with the heat map and sculpting tools. For proximal contacts, green on the heat map is the recommended ideal contact target.
  6. Use X-ray view to inspect internal adaptation and thickness. 

Finish allowance

AI Studio guidance suggests leaving approximately 100-200 micrometers of intersection when the restoration will be polished, or slight positive spacing when stain and glaze will be added. Review the heat map and keep the selected finishing path consistent.

 

4.3 Signature Design

  1. Sign in to SprintRay Cloud, add or select the patient, and start a new treatment.
  2. Choose the restoration treatment: Bonded Restoration or Veneer as displayed for the account and region.
  3. Upload the files from Cloud Drive or the computer and complete the order form with the clinical records listed below.

5. Manufacture

What you need: SprintRay Midas; Midas Restore capsule; cotton swabs; silicone interdental brush; clean compressed air; SprintRay NanoCure

DO NOT PRIME

Do not prime the Midas Restore capsule. Push the print platform fully down before installing the capsule on Midas. If the platform is not fully seated, the print can fail.

 

5.1 Choose where to build the print job

Option A: Build the job on the Midas printer

  1. On the Midas touchscreen, select AutoPrint.
  2. Select Midas Restore as the resin.
  3. Select the approved STL file from SprintRay Cloud.
  4. Scan the Midas Restore capsule.
  5. Remove the UV-protective film and install the capsule as shown on screen.
  6. Start the print and allow the complete cycle to finish.

Option B: Build the job in SprintRay Dashboard

  1. In SprintRay Dashboard, open the approved design in Print Setup or import the manufacturing file.
  2. Select the restoration type, then set Printer to Midas, Capsule to Single Unit Capsule, and Resin to Midas Restore.
  3. Apply the SprintRay Autopilot recommendation for orientation and support placement.
  4. Send the job to the Queue and select the Midas printer.
  5. On the Midas touchscreen, open the job queued from SprintRay Dashboard.
  6. Scan the Midas Restore capsule.
  7. Remove the UV-protective film and install the capsule as shown on screen.
  8. Start the print and allow the complete cycle to finish.
  9. When the print cycle finishes, leave the restoration attached to the platform and continue directly to the Midas ShakeWash workflow in Section 5.2.

5.2 Wash with Midas ShakeWash

IPA EXPOSURE

Avoid extended exposure to IPA. Remove the platform and printed restoration from the ShakeWash bottle immediately after the 45-second wash. Do not leave the restoration in the bottle; prolonged exposure can cause surface chalkiness.

 

SHAKEWASH CARE

For best ShakeWash longevity, replace diluted IPA every 2-3 wash cycles. Do not let IPA and resin sit in the container for an extended period; it can soil the plastic and make the container difficult to clean. To clean, add fresh IPA, shake the container, and dump the IPA immediately after shaking.

 
  1. When printing is complete, remove the capsule from the Midas printer and pull the platform side out of the capsule body.
  2. Fill a clean Midas ShakeWash bottle by adding 99% IPA to one-third of the labeled fill-line volume, then add water to the fill line. This produces approximately 30% IPA.
  3. Push the platform or restoration holder fully into the bottle and confirm that it is seated and sealed.
  4. Shake the bottle vertically for 45 seconds.
  5. After washing, remove the platform from the ShakeWash bottle. Use clean compressed air or a blower and a resin-absorbent towel to remove excess surface resin from the platform and restoration.
  6. Blow-dry the platform and restoration immediately so residual IPA or resin film does not dry unevenly on the surface.
  7. Detach the restoration or restorations from the platform.

    SUPPORT REMOVAL

    Remove all supports before curing. Use a sharp cutting tool and cut each support as close to the restoration as possible. Support the restoration during cutting and avoid applying undue pressure. For thin veneers, protect delicate edges.

     
  8. Inspect the restoration, including grooves and the intaglio.

    CLEANING NOTE

    Use a clean cotton swab, silicone interdental brush, or microbrush to remove remaining residue, then dry with clean compressed air.

     

5.3 Post-cure in NanoCure

  1. Place the cleaned restoration in NanoCure.
  2. Run the preprogrammed Midas Restore cycle on NanoCure.

Characterization is optional. Select one complete manufacturer system and follow the linked workflow. Do not combine primers, colors, glazes, or cure instructions from different systems.
